You cannot walk through Lamu without running into a donkey or several donkeys at every corner. You may see them with their owner being guided along or carrying something on their strong donkey backs, but usually they are just randomly standing around enjoying Lamu life. We wondered how the owner would know where to find his/her donkey. They are occasionally branded but can be mixed up with the many other donkeys and surely the owner is not going to check every single donkey for its branding. We were told that the donkeys recognize the unique wistle of their owner which must make finding your donkey so much easier. They even have a donkey hospital and an animal sanctuary that is used espeically for donkeys without homes.
Wow, that's a lot of donkey.
